Health experts predict that people in China may continue to face various respiratory illnesses during the winter and upcoming spring, with influenza viruses remaining prevalent for now. Wang Dayan, director of the China National Influenza Center, warns of a potential rebound in the COVID-19 epidemic in January, primarily due to the JN.1 variant strain’s continuous importation, a decrease in domestic influenza cases, and declining population immunity.
The National Health Commission in China reports a fluctuating downward trend in patients at fever clinics across the country, with respiratory diseases, particularly influenza, still being the primary concern. Despite a relatively low level of COVID-19 infections, there is a risk of the JN.1 variant becoming the dominant strain in China.
On a global scale, India is experiencing an increase in COVID-19 cases attributed to the JN.1 variant, even though overall case numbers are declining. Over 1,200 cases have been reported in 17 states and Union Territories, with Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala, West Bengal, Goa, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat having the highest numbers. India has previously witnessed three waves of COVID-19, with the peak occurring during the delta wave in April-June 2021.
Individuals must recognize COVID-19 symptoms, get tested, and isolate to prevent the spread of the virus. Common symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath, along with fatigue, body aches, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, and difficulty breathing. In severe cases, COVID-19 can lead to pneumonia, respiratory distress, organ failure, and death. Some people may be asymptomatic carriers. It’s important to stay vigilant for symptoms, practice good hygiene, wear masks, and seek medical attention if necessary.
