National Cancer Awareness Day in India is a crucial occasion aimed at raising awareness about the various types of cancer, the importance of early detection, and the significant lifestyle changes needed to combat this deadly disease.
Cancer, a global scourge, is on the rise, with one in ten Indians expected to develop cancer in their lifetime and one in fifteen facing the grim prospect of succumbing to it, as per the International Agency for Research on Cancer’s (IARC) World Cancer Report from the World Health Organization (WHO). Lifestyle factors play a substantial role in cancer development. It’s no surprise that cancers like breast and colorectal cancer, linked to factors like obesity, low physical activity, and a sedentary lifestyle, have been on the rise. National Cancer Awareness Day in India serves as a platform to spread awareness about different cancer types, the critical need for early detection, and the lifestyle changes individuals should make to battle this disease.
According to the WHO, cancer encompasses a diverse group of diseases that can originate in any organ or tissue of the body. It occurs when abnormal cells proliferate uncontrollably and may spread to other parts of the body, a condition known as metastatic cancer. Globally, it ranks as the second leading cause of death. Common cancers affecting men include lung, prostate, colorectal, stomach, and liver cancers, while women are often affected by breast, colorectal, lung, cervical, and thyroid cancers.
National Cancer Awareness Day is observed on November 7 every year in India. The day was inaugurated in September 2014 by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare in India. A committee was formed, and November 7 was chosen as the annual observance date with the aim of educating and informing the public about cancer, its treatment, and how early intervention can significantly improve survival rates.
The significance of National Cancer Awareness Day lies in the fact that more than 50% of cancer cases are detected at advanced stages, which can greatly affect the chances of survival. Early detection is key to a full recovery. Identifying cancer or pre-cancerous changes at an early stage through various screening methods provides an opportunity to take action to slow down or prevent cancer development. This day serves as a reminder to prioritize regular check-ups and a healthy lifestyle to reduce the burden of cancer in our communities.
